Thriller Film Opening Sequence Evaluation - 1500-2000 words
PowerPoint uploaded to moodle

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge conventions of real media products?
What conventions of professional products have you used in your own film? (narrative conventions, character conventions, genre, camerawork, sound, editing, special effects, mise-en-scene? Use screen grabs of your own sequence to illustrate each example where you have followed conventions or gone against (challenged) conventions. Also use images from the films that have influenced you where relevant.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups? (gender, age, ethnicity etc.)
Compare a character in your sequence to a character in a professional film (use images). If you have included a villain/victim character, does the character follow conventions of characters in professional films. For example, is your villain male? Is your victim female? Therefore how are you representing gender?

3. What kind of media institution would distribute your media product?

Discuss similar professional films and their production companies (use images of the films and logos). Which production Company do you think would distribute your film? (if it was professional and if you had made the full film).

4. Who would be the audience for your media product? (BBFC and target audience) Use images from a similar product with a similar target audience. Remember that target audience is not the same as classification.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Refer to Significant moments in your sequence where you have tried to generate a response from the spectator (a close up to encourage identification with a character, music that encourages the spectator to feel suspense, tense, visceral reaction etc.) What techniques have you used to encourage the spectator to want to see the rest of the film? (Clues about narrative, character, etc.) Use screen grabs of your own sequence.

6. What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing your product?

(blog, camera equipment, editing software – Final Cut Express, istopmotion, Garageband etc.) Use screen grabs/photos of all these things. Be very specific about tools/effects/techniques learnt not just ‘I have learnt a lot about the software’

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to your final product?
Discuss your second preliminary task that you did in a week before starting Thriller. Discuss what you have learnt since then about construction of micro elements in order to create meaning, how to use different techniques, practical skills etc. How have you built on your knowledge that you learnt from the prelim task? Use screen grabs of your prelim task and your sequence where relevant.

Planning Developments

We have made a few developments during the filming of our thriller opening:
  • We have to use a different office scene because we realised that the camera was visible on the right hand side of the shot.
  • We have cut one of shots so Dean is not visible when he shouldn't be.
  • We have also decided to change some of the sound, to make it more in sync and to add to the atmosphere/mood of the scene
  • We have changed the font and style of the opening credits.

response to feedback

we have considered all problems mentioned in the feedback.

firstly, we will be adding news style titles and music to the beginning to emphasize the fact that it is actually a news reel. secondly, many groups mentioned that you could see Dean's character slightly in the news reel shot before he was mentioned and that this took away the effectivness of the situaion. as a result of these comments we will be cutting of dean from this part by cropping the shot. some goups also said that the background music was to loud. this was something that was going to be changed anyway aswell as the ticking in the music. Finally, one group said that the scene should be longer and we will try to drag the scene out a bit longer but we do think that this could take away some of the effectivness that makes the scene as fast as it is.

Feedback on Roughcut

- We can see the camera hooked up to the TV... Live news feed atmosphere ruined by it.
- The black and white framing for the terrorists was pretty well done, like the effects used.
- News feed could use a broadcaster company overlay with headlines (See BBC).
- News feed works well with terrorist scenes
- Good use of effects on titles
- Person being interviewed is also inside the building in one of the sequences.
p1-04:
The titles used fit in with the genre of the opening scene and are conventional of a thriller. The sound for the opening could have been changed so that the background noises could not be heard so much. There are a few problems with continuity editing.
P1-05
We liked the effects of the titles, this made it dramatic and added to drama of the hostage situation. The use of different camera angles was affective because it made the sequence much faster and created high suspense.
We thought that at the very start when you can see Dean slightly in the camera frame this made it a little less believable. But apart from that its brill mate.

P1-01
Very good editing and shot variation. The acting was again top notch!!! The titles were very effective. Also the use of voiceovers created an added element and made it more believable. The title sequences were clever as they created suspense. Needs to be made A LOT longer despite this...top notch!

Rough Cut of 21

we are very happy with this rough cut however there are some things that we need to add/ change. one thing that needs touching up is the sound of the news reel and the background noise in that. this will be changed to make the cuts less obvious and the sequence flow better. as well as this, the final title needs touch up because the style is not exactly what we wanted.
